One of the areas where I help and support businesses is Strategy and Planning. VMOST is the tool I use.
Often Business Owners and Managers cannot devote time and resources to developing and reviewing their strategy and planning. Some see it as a luxury rather than a necessity. Some draw up business plans but then put them aside as they get drawn into the multitude of distracting tasks, problems and issues.
Strategy is not a theoretical exercise exclusively for “big companies”, but is a vital process for your business growth giving you clear objectives, clear actions and a dashboard of relevant metrics to measure your success. Strategy and Planning drive your business and provides the focus for all your actions.
A Strategy is a plan of action designed to achieve a long-term or overall aim. It is that simple! So every business can and should have one.
Fundamentally, it's all about understanding where you are now and where you want to be. I help my customers to work through steps to create their strategy called VMOST - Vision, Mission, Objectives, Strategy, Tactics.
We start by looking at your Vision: what you want to achieve in your business and then your Mission: what you do and who you do it for.
Once we have identified what you’re overall aims are we examine where the business is right now. This situational analysis identifies the gap between where you are now and where you want to get to.
This will include a SWOT analysis; here you will identify strengths that you can leverage, weaknesses you need to eliminate, opportunities you can exploit and threats you need to guard against.
The situational analysis identifies all the actions you need to take. We will then define these as detailed SMARTER Objectives, to allow you to understand all the things you need to do to bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be.
Next, we will look at how you going to deliver these objectives. Ultimately this is the essence of your Strategy: the series of specific action plans you are going to follow to achieve your objectives.
Finally, Tactics are the day-to-day, week-to-week activities defined and timetabled to complete your action plans.
A straightforward set of steps meaning that in no time at all, you will have a clear strategy and detailed, specific action plans to achieve your Vision and Mission.
